What's Going on In First Grade? Curricular Update Feb. 6th

Language Arts: Students will begin a new writing unit  called writing reviews (opinion writing).  Please show your child real-life reviews of movies, books, hotels, parks,and restaurants in newspapers or online. They will  write reviews on their favorite movies, restaurants, and toys. 

Math: Students will finish place value.  Students will practice addition facts using doubles and solving number stories.  At home students can practice adding numbers using dice or cards.

Science: Students will experiment with the growth of plants.  Do all plants (catnip, lettuce) grow back with you cut them?  What will happen when you cut off a leaf (sword of St. George) and put it in water?  
Social Studies:  Students will learn more about community helpers.  Students are also learning to be good helpers at school and at home.  Students need to bring in a picture of them helping at home so they can write about it.  

Portuguese: Na primeira semana de aula, os alunos participaram de diversos jogos e atividades orais para refletir sobre as rimas em português a partir do livro “Não Confunda, de Eva Furnari. Agora, farão atividades de leitura e escrita para pensar sobre como as palavras são escritas em Português. Em

casa, recomendamos que vocês brinquem de “Não Confunda” e “Você Troca” com eles, usando rimas. Bom divertimento!

Happy New Year from the LS Library! Please stop by to check out books, magazines, audiobooks, and DVDs or to learn more about our online resources. If you haven't set up a parent account yet for accessing our online magazines, books, etc., you're welcome to do that any time.

In February, we're celebrating Love Your Library Month and World Read Aloud Day. We are so incredibly lucky to be at a wonderful school, with access to almost limitless reading material. World Read Aloud Day (on February 16) is about celebrating all of the books surrounding us, and the joy of reading them aloud together! It's also about raising awareness of the 758 million adults worldwide who lack basic reading and writing skills and the 59 million primary age children who are not in school (UNESCO, 2016).

We hope you read with your children every day, but please make a special point on February 16 to read together (age doesn't matter)! Talk about all of the things in your life that you are able to do because of reading and writing. Literacy impacts virtually every aspect of our lives. Consider discussing ways your family can help those who do not have the access to education and resources that we do. Most importantly, share a love of reading!
