Maykut: Reading a Coin

What does a coin have to do with reading? Students were given a coin (25 centavos) and a magnifying glass and were told that good readers pay attention to details and ask questions.

Here are some of the details they noticed:

-Brasil
-Centavos
-2002 (year coin was made)
-Republica
-15 Novembro
-5 stars
-Deodoro - Brazilian president
-presidents wear medals
-ring around the circle
-25 centavos
-lines

Here are some of the questions that they came up with?

Why are there stars on the coin?
Is the coin made of gold?
Who is Deodoro?
Who is the man?

Hopefully kids will make a connection that when reading non-fiction they should pay attention to to details (especially the pictures) and ask questions if they are confused or intrigued.

Paying attention to details.
Details are small.

Questions?

Recording observations and questions.

Reading a coin... non-fiction.
