Mr. Maykut: How Can You Balance a Pencil?

Students began writing another lab report today.  Their question was: How can you balance a pencil on its tip? Each student wrote a hypothesis and then tested out.  Most of the hypothesis were incorrect but that doesn't matter because scientists learn from their mistakes.

Weights are too high.

Lowering the weights make it stable.
Success!

Putting the weights in the center helps.
It's possible!

Using weights and counterweights.
Balancing on a finger

Sideways?!

Practice makes perfect.
Good job!

It works!

Well done!

There's more than one way to balance a pencil!
Super!
