2nd Grade: Curriculum Update

READING:
This week we begin our 4th unit in reading: Series Book Clubs
Students will join book clubs and begin reading a series with a partner or small group. They will then have the opportunity to swap books within their clubs. They will analyze, study and collect information about the stars (main characters) of their books. They will discuss how characters feel and behave, how they respond to situations and what their relationships are like.

Anchor Charts that will be used in the beginning of this unit.

WRITING:
A lot of engaged writing continues to be seen in all 2nd grade classrooms. Students continue to work on their information book on their chosen topic. After doing plenty of research, classifying their information into chapters they are now organizing it all into a nonfiction book. Students are being encouraged to add voice to their writing, engaging their reader in each chapter. Parents will have a chance to read these books at student led conferences.

SCIENCE:

Students have wrapped up their work with lab reports and are preparing for a very exciting hands on group project. Each class will spend a day in the studio and make a Rube Goldberg Machine. Teams will consist of 4-5 classmates each. This project will take place after student led conferences.

What is a Rube Goldberg Machine? An invention that is designed to perform a very simple task in a very complicated way, usually including a chain reaction. It is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg.

This week they will begin to understand what this machine does and start brainstorming ideas of how they will create their own. Click Here to watch the slide show presentation used in classrooms with a variety of links and videos of Rube Goldberg machines.
