We are ending our Reading Series Unit! As our second graders read, read, read within a series, they'll become experts not only on characters but also on favorite authors. In this final reading band, students will innovate and invent ways to share their books with others. Readers will also begin to learn how to have a debate inside their clubs,as another way to share and talk about books.
Second Graders have become POETS!! We are busy writing our poems and getting ready for our POETRY CAFE on May 29th and 30th! Poets are making decisions that strengthen the meaning of their poems. Students are learning how to use honest and precise words, how to use patterns and repetition of sounds,words, line breaks, and that poems have structures, i.e. conversation poems, list poems,story poems,mask poems, and riddle poems. Deciding on the mood, bringing it out, and putting it all together will be our focus for the rest of this unit!
The first part of Unit 10 extends previous work with money and fractions to decimal notation for dollars-and-cents amounts. The second part of this unit extends place value concepts to 5-digit numbers. Providing experiences with comparing prices, estimating costs, making change, and extending place value concepts, will be the main areas of focus.
Science
We are very excited to start our last science unit! PEBBLES, SAND, and SILT! Students will investigate different types of rocks and discover that:
- Rocks are the solid material of the earth and they are our planet's natural resources,
- Rocks have a variety of properties,
- Rocks can be sorted by their properties,
- Rocks are all around us, and they are important minerals!
- Rocks sizes include clay,silt,sand, gravel,and pebbles.
- The properties of different earth materials make each suitable for specific uses.
- Earth materials are commonly used in the construction of buildings and streets.
