Brazilian Independence Day
Green, blue and yellow could be found everywhere you looked on Thursday at Graded.
Your child then had the chance to celebrate Brazil Independence Day in the morning with an
assembly with three wonderful entertainers. They were perfect examples of the vibrant culture
that is Brazil. Grades 3-5 danced and sang, and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

Our Portuguese Teachers continued the celebration throughout the day and during
Portuguese class students had the opportunity to experience many surprises. Thank you
to all of the parents and teachers that helped to make this such a fun filled day!

Many of those lessons included work on:
- Comparing numbers
- Reading and writing multi-digit numbers
- Rounding mutli-digit numbers to any place using a vertical number line
- Using place value understanding to round multi-digit numbers to any place value
- Find 1, 10 and 100 more than and less than a given number

Unique Brazil
We are continuing to work through the five themes of geography using Brazil as our model
country. We are beginning to introduce the thinking routine-see, think wonder as students
delve deeper into their prior knowledge about Brazil and geography in general. They are
making connections and asking relevant questions. We are enjoying watching their learning
process!

Dr. Purcell has been into all fourth grade classes both explaining and modeling the main
benefits of the library websites. This included finding books, placing them on hold, and even
making book recommendations to friends!

We are continuing to work on Realistic fiction during reading and writing workshop. Tiger Rising
is starting to get quite interesting and we are making comparisons between characters and
inferring with evidence why these characters act a specific way. Ask your child about the two
main characters-Rob or Sistene. We are sure you will be impressed with their response.

During writing time the fourth graders are becoming authors. At this point students have
committed to their story and are using a story arc as a visual guide to scaffold their thinking.
They are also developing characters, both the internal and external traits and problems that
are similar to ten year olds.

It was wonderful to meet so many of you on Back to School Night. The Powerpoint presentation used by all Grade four teachers can also be found on the blog. If you would like to schedule a meeting with your child's teacher please let them know.
