Weekly Update-October 19th

It is so hard to believe that the first trimester is nearly over.  We really enjoyed meeting with you and discussing your child's growth last week.

Math

We are well on our way into our second unit on Measurement where students continue to build on the measurement work from previous grade levels.  This is a fairly short unit and therefore there is only one assessment. It focuses on length, mass and capacity in the Metric System, where place value serves as a natural guide for moving between larger and smaller units. 

Literacy

We are starting our second unit on Non-fiction:Reading the World - Informational Texts. During this time we'll be diving deep into the purpose of nonfiction and paying close attention to text features and text structures. Students are learning to read non-fiction texts and using various strategies to help guide their discussion. 

In writing we will be exploring persuasive writing using research. This critically important unit is both challenging and demanding, and will transfer across the curriculum. During this time your child will be held more accountable for accumulating and drawing upon prior learning, and developing even greater independence. 

Science

Our science unit is all about diverse ecosystems. Each class will be studying a specific ecosystem; and will learn how that ecosystem functions among the living and nonliving factors and the food webs that are integrated throughout it. Please look at the following vocabulary link which gives several chances to practice vocabulary that will be used throughout this unit.

We need your help to bring pumpkins and to volunteer. Please let Ms. Lara or your homeroom teacher know if you are interested.

All classes in Grades 3-5 will choose a Student Council Representative soon. They will promote a positive school spirit by being examples of high standards of character and leadership. The following Google slide presentation lists all expectations and requirements and has been shared with your child.

Peter Reynolds is coming this week!

We are all so excited to have Peter Reynolds come to Graded next week.  He is an illustrator and an author and is passionate about creativity. Grades 3-5 will have an assembly this Friday, and each grade four class will also have an individual class period with him to do an extended activity.

The Halloween Parade will take place on Friday, November 1st. We will be sending more information closer to the date about the parade and the class celebrations.
