Bi-Weekly Update-November 15th

We are continuing to work on the different ways to solve multiplication problems. Some of these methods include the area model and partial product, along with the standard algorithm. These methods build on the  place value that was taught in previous chapters. Please make sure that your child knows and is comfortable with the basic multiplication facts. These essential skills are important to help them develop further in multiplication.

This interdisciplinary unit incorporates the work we are doing on ecosystems. As your child explores a specific ecosystem they will also be learning a variety of research skills. Dr. Purcell will be a valuable resource in this area. She will be coming into each class to do a series of lessons where she will explain how to effectively research. Part of this process includes taking notes. And paraphrasing the information we read. These skills are important for this lesson, but also in life.

Each fourth graders is in the process of writing an opinion piece where they are persuading their audience about something they feel strongly about.  The topics are age appropriate and interesting. During this process students build on the work they are doing during Reading Workshop. They decide on a solid and strong thesis statement and back it up with reasons and evidence.  Many of the lessons that are taught include a mini-story where you also appeal to the heart of your reader. 

The last two weeks have been an exciting time for your children.  We had a group of zoologists come

to school and show us many of the different animals that are common among the rainforest here in
Brazil. These included a small alligator, frogs, turtles, guinea pigs and even cockroaches. After the
presentations, students were able to touch the animals. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that
everyone enjoyed!

Each student was also given the chance to make their own terrarium.  We were impressed with the
responses from your children when they were asked about their knowledge of ecosystems. They were
able to make clear connections from the content they are learning in class, and more importantly apply
to understand the purpose for making a terrarium. 

To connect all of the learning we are doing in science we were able to put it together by visiting
Serra do Mar. It was a wonderful day of exploring in a real rainforest.  The guide described in detail
how biotic and abiotic factors work together in an ecosystem, as well as describe the rich diversity
of plants.

On November 28th the LS will present A Short Tale of Mr. Dickens on November 26th at 5:30

in the auditorium. Our third, fourth and fifth grade have worked hard and their classmates are
looking forward to seeing them perform. There will be an performance during the school day so
all students will have a chance to see the play.

December Birthdays will take place on Thursday, December 12th at 11:00 in the LS playground where there will be a table labeled with your child’s class. If your child’s birthday is during that month please bring a small treat for each student in their class.  Feel free to come at 10:45 to set up. Please remember to bring plates, forks, and a lighter if you have candles.
