Dear Parents,
To celebrate our Science Interdependence unit, we are excited to explore nature and its mysteries
in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar - Núcleo Itutinga Pilões on Monday, November 11th
(Ms. Thibodeaux and Mr. Braszell) and Tuesday, November 12th (Ms. Murphy and Ms. Trabelsi).
Serra do Mar State Park (PESM) is the largest Conservation Unit in the entire Atlantic Forest.
Its cliffs dominate the landscape of the coast of São Paulo and its forests shelter and protect
hundreds of species of birds and other threatened animals, such as cats and primates.
Rio Passareúva Trail was the best option for contact with nature in this area.It is located
between the metropolitan areas of São Paulo and Baixada Santista. The trail includes river
crossing, the meeting of the Pilões and Passareúva rivers, and we will be exploring the
interdependence between all living and nonliving things in the Mata Atlantica, as a way of
applying what we learned in this unit to real life.

We will leave Graded at 6:45 am sharp and request that students arrive no later than 6:30 am.
Traffic leaving this area can be challenging. We will return to school at 5:30 pm. Please make
the necessary arrangements for pick-up. Some bus riders might be able to catch the 6:00 pm
bus. Please check with Silvio Pedreira if this is possible for your child. The cost of this program
is R$280,00 (two hundred eighty reais) per student, billed to the monthly tuition. It includes
transportation, a picnic lunch, a hike to the Cabreúva Waterfall, guides, as well as monitors from
Terra Nativa.

Since we will be crossing a river, we ask that your child comes to school wearing the oldest
tennis shoe possible and brings a spare pair to change into. Please make sure your
son/daughter wear comfortable clothes, a cap and put sunscreen on before leaving the house.
Also pack a snack bag for the ride and make sure to include a water bottle.
