Weekly Update-November 1st

MATH

All classes have started our third unit on multiplication. It is important that your child reviews their times
tables.  Multiplication forms the building blocks for other mathematical concepts and is also applied in
many real life concepts. This important skill will help your child prepare for the work which comes ahead
in this unit. In addition to the standard algorithm, there will be a variety of different methods such as the
area model and partial products that will be taught. There will be plenty of time spent during class to
supplement this process. 

READING

We are continuing our work on nonfiction and exploring the different text structures that are seen in

the diverse collection of nonfiction that we both read and listen to every day. Some of these include
comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, chronological order and problem and solution.  Your child
is becoming quite adept at being able to look at a story and decide on the text structure that is used
based on their observations.

 WRITING

During writing, we are focusing on a topic that students feel comfortable both writing and researching.
They are learning how to write a strong thesis statement that can be supported with solid reasons and
ample evidence. This is hard work and we are proud of the stamina that your children are showing.
Soon we will enter the research phase of our opinion writing and with our new Chromebooks
everyone is fully on board!

SCIENCE

Everyone is enjoying learning about how animals and the ecosystems they inhabit. To supplement

our unit we will have two field trips one will be here at Graded this Wednesday, November 6th. 
Zoologists will bring small animals and under their supervision they will teach us about their adaptations.
Your child will also have the chance to make their own terrarium. Terrariums teach how plants, animals
and insects interact similar to the real world, and  that all living things have the same resources to share
and keep everything in balance.

Then our trip to Serra del Mar will take place on two days. 

4A &  4D -Monday, November 11th

4B &  4C-Tuesday, November 12th

During this trip, students will have the chance to walk through an actual ecosystem here in Brazil
and learn how the diverse plants and animals interact with each other, Each group will have a guided
tour guide to show us around and ask any specific questions. If you have any specific questions about
the trip, please ask your child's teacher.

November Birthdays will take place on Thursday, November 14th at 12:45 in the LS playground where there will be a table labeled with your child’s class. If your child’s birthday is during that month please bring a small treat for each student in their class.  Feel free to come at 12:30 to set up. Please remember to bring plates, forks, and a lighter if you have candles.
