First Grade Overnight Experience!!!

Everyone is excited for the  First Grade Overnight Experience on May 5, 2017.  We know this will be a meaningful, character-building event which ties in perfectly with our current social studies unit where students examine the difference between WANTS and NEEDS.  The learning for this trip begins at home, where students must pack their own bags with things that they need (clothing, sleeping bag, healthy food, etc.).

This letter is the first of several communications regarding the overnight.  Please read each of them carefully, and return the permission slip and student information on the back, as this will ensure a safe and organized experience for all involved.

Here are some frequently asked questions to help you understand and begin planning for this experience:

What should my child bring?
Students will be coming home with a detailed packing list.  Creating this packing list will be an important learning experience which considers their needs versus wants. Students are encouraged to pack their own bags at home.

How will food work during this overnight experience?
Students will also plan their meal experiences as a class.  We will ask parent volunteers to work with teachers and class parents to help send in portions of our meals (breads, fruits, meats, juice, etc.) Students will “pack their own dinner” from a classroom buffet. Breakfast will be organized by a group of parent volunteers and will be served in the cafeteria on Saturday morning between 7:00 and 8:00am.

Where will my child be sleeping?
Children will be sleeping in their own classrooms on mats using sleeping bags or blankets and pillows brought from home.

Who will be staying with my child?
Your child will be in the classroom with two or three chaperones.
Mr. Maykut’s class:  Kevin Maykut, Carla Ramalho, Patricia Purdie
Ms. Heineberg’s class: Daphne Heineberg, Carla Bruno,
Ms. Burnquist’s class: Susan Burnquist, Christopher Lockhart, D. Lu
Ms. Keane’s class:  Shannon Keane, Mari Formicola.
Can parents stay (overnight or throughout the evening)?
No.  We view this experience as an important turning point for our students, as well as a great community building exercise.  We have an abundance of staff volunteering to help and therefore ask that parents allow students to try this out on their own.  Additionally, this is a great scaffolding experience toward multiple overnight adventures students will have throughout their stay at Graded.

How can I help?
Classroom teachers and class parents will be arranging the necessary food for the students’ dinner and breakfast.  Please look out for communications about this.
