Mr. Maykut: Nonfiction Research

Students are learning how to read nonfiction which focuses on identifying the main ideas and finding details to support them.

Together as a class, we've read a nonfiction book about snails.  Afterwards we generated a list of details which was are now sorting under a few main ideas.  Once the ideas are organized, students will begin writing their own nonfiction book about snails complete with a cover, pictures, introduction, conclusion, glossary and index.

This process will also help students prepare for their up and coming nonfiction book talk.  Next week Jun, Sadie, Nathan, Leah and Livia will present their book talks.  Your child will be notified a week in advance when their book talk is.  There is additional information on this blog that parents can refer to in order to help out.

Reading all about snails.

Each sheet represents a main idea.

A main idea could be that a snail looks cool.

Another main idea could be that snails eat plants.

Each white sheet of paper is a detail about the main idea.

A detail could be that a snail has a spiky tongue.

Putting the details in a logical order was key.

This hands on process allows students to move around details.

Details are glued down.
